What are the benefits of Bible study?

 By Calvin Okello

Have you ever wondered whether it is worthwhile investing time to study the word of God? Does it help? or is it worthwhile. This article provides an overview of some of the benefits of bible study and how that can be a transformative process to your life.

There are many benefits of Christian bible study. Here are some of them:

Bible study can help us grow our faith in many ways. For example, God preserved the Bible so that as we study the written Word, our faith would grow through learning how He has worked with others before us. Our faith also grows when we plant the character and promises of Jesus as seeds in our hearts.

When we study the word of God, our knowledge of him increases. We learn through the accounts and stories that are recorded in various books in the Bible. As we deepen our understanding of the word we then are able to share the truths that we have gleaned from there.

God reveals and speaks to us through His word and reading and following the directions from that enable us to build strong relationship with Him.  Intimacy with God is encouraged throughout the Bible. God wired us with the desire to be drawn to Him (John 6:44). Adam and Eve fellowshipped with God daily before the fall. Moses spent significant time with God in the Tent of Meeting, where the Lord spoke with Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend (Exodus 33:11).

Bible study can give us wisdom and understanding. The primary way we gain godly wisdom is by learning God’s Word (Psalm 119:169). “The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130)1. The Bible talks a lot about gaining wisdom and defines it by giving examples and then showcasing what happens when we don’t act wisely. The book of Proverbs contrasts the wise and the foolish and tells us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10).

Studying the Bible helps be equipped and through investing our time to study with others we all benefit. Studying the Bible is awesome. Doing what you read is better. It allows the Spirit to open our understanding like nothing else can. Bible study grows our faith. It increases our knowledge of God. Deepens intimacy with Him. Bible study gives us wisdom and understanding. It equips us to share our faith and invest in others. When we take the time for consistent prayer and Bible study—God’s presence rubs off on us.

Bible study can be a source of strength and guidance to life. Throughout the Bible, we are reminded of the strength that comes from relying on God, trusting in His will, and having faith in His love for us. Psalm 119:105 ,”Your word us a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”, reminds us that God’s work can guide us in our daily walk with Him. Despite the difficulties we face in life, we can draw on the strength of God to get through them. The Bible is a tremendous source for those seeking guidance in their life. From the wisdom and knowledge of scripture, we can make improved decisions and become better people as we navigate the complexity of the worl.

There is every benefit that we gain by daily reading and listening to God through the written word. The best part of it is to learn, share that  with others and also practice what you learn.
